WHITEMOOR PRISON AND RAM — an overview

Whitemoor Prison, officially HM Prison Whitemoor, was opened in 1991, the same year as Belmarsh, so it is a very new prison; Wandsworth, for example, was opened in 1851.

Whitemoor is a dispersal prison, a high security prison for male inmates only. Due to its modernity, one would expect it to be escape-proof; that does appear to be the case, but it has been far from trouble-proof.

In September 1994, there was a serious escape attempt when somehow a gun was smuggled into the prison by the Provisional IRA. The would-be escapees consisted of six men, including one described as a London gangster.

I thought Ram might have been involved in this somehow but he was charged in relation to something pre-dating this. He appeared in court at Peterborough in February 1995 along with five other men, but nothing appears to have come of it. Later in the year he would face a more important court hearing when the Court Of Appeal dismissed his second spurious appeal.
