Douglas Draycott, QC, (1918-97), was Leading Counsel for Satpal Ram. He has been blamed for Ram’s conviction by the Free Satpal Campaign and Ram himself – along with virtually everyone else under the Sun bar the real culprit.
In October 2000, the current writer had a long telephone conversation with the clerk * to the late Douglas Draycott’s chambers (who stressed that he was not the senior clerk at that time). He described Draycott as a gentleman, very kind-hearted and a first class advocate who thoroughly prepared his work. Draycott was a wonderful character and a bright personality. A flattering (but undoubtedly accurate) portrait of the man and his career was published in a local newspaper in April 1995.
When I was researching the 2026 (final?) update for this site I found an article that alluded to a picket of Draycott’s chambers. I remembered then something the Clerk told me these imbeciles had been chanting:
“Douglas Draycott is a git;
He dropped Satpal in the shit”.
I’m surprised Asian Dub Foundation didn’t include this in their twisted lyrics to Free Satpal Ram.
